Stranger danger!

Stranger danger[1] indeed!

…and what, dear reader, is stranger in this day and age than a Layers blog? Yes, rarer than a straight answer in election season and almost as tedious, we’re back with new adventures in piffle and strained metaphors.

Photographed with soft light from behind. Purely aesthetic. Certainly not to stop the wrinkles showing for some of us…

Regular readers[2] (double points for regularity if you’re reading this on the lavatory) may notice a slight variation in the lineup of the band that you’ve come to, if not know and love, then vaguely recognise. That’s because our most recent gig was put under unusual duress by Sarah’s scuttling off to the other side of the world and Nathalie recently having had a person emerge from her.

We weren’t about to let the temporary loss of one third of the band to risk Yate being unrocked, so out of nothing more than habit, we naturally started looking for stand in drummers, before realising that Alan was fine. Once the shock of a lack of drummer-related drama wore off, it was time to hunt behind the sofa cushions and into the dank corners of the Internet for some individuals with the unique qualities[3] required to join The Layers.

So, from the left, may we introduce and extend our heartfelt thanks to Adam and Kaz, making the rest of us look very, very old. Filling in on keys and vocals and backing vocals respectively, they both did an amazing job. Simply learning the set in a short time would have been impressive, but due to holiday and lurgey schedules[4] neither of our new recruits were able to meet Alan until the day of the gig.

Facing the audience of “Yate Rocks!” with a band you’ve never actually played with before is no mean feat. More so in Adam’s case because this was his first ever gig with a band. So we were blown away when both Adam and Kaz kept cool as cucumbers, playing and singing like they’d done it a hundred times before and helping us to bring the denizens of Yate to their feet and get them dancing and singing along.

Kaz and Adam are both songwriters in their own right, too, so we’re hoping to get the chance to collaborate with them further this year, so watch this space and hopefully we may put out a joint project[5] at some point this year.

Some of us in the band have been playing together for a long time. It’s been a genuine pleasure and privilege to share a stage and our music with two people just setting out on their musical journeys. They’re both talented young people, making us deeply envious, and we’re sure they’re destined for big success.

Hoping to see you at a gig soon, dear reader! Unlimited love. Remember to flush.

[1] Scary, but not as scary as a strangler dangler.

[2] The Layers accept no responsibility for psychological scarring caused by repeated exposure to this drivel

[3] i.e Available. Poor judge of character. Easily persuaded.

[4] We’ve got much more organised and are now ill on a simple rota basis. Except for rotoviruses, ironically.

[5] Or put out a back trying!
